SCSI-9 (Kompakt, Russia)

Interview by Chris Honnery

SCSI-9: From Russia With Love

Interview with Anton Kubikov

Russia’s SCSI-9, the pair of Anton Kubikov and Maxim Milutenko, have forged a career alongside some of the leading figures in Europe’s electronic scene since forming almost a decade ago. Signed to the revered Cologne label Kompakt records, the pair have collaborated with Superpitcher, been remixed by the likes of Gui Boratto and Tom Clark as well as recently launching their on label, Pro-Tez.

It all started with releases on Traum and Trapez,” Anton begins.

Riley ‘Triple R’ [prominent producer Richard Riley Reinhold] was working at the Kompakt record store at that time and I was there for a visit. That way I met all the Kompakt gang, and I played some of our tunes. They liked it, and that was the start. Now we are part of the Kompakt family,” he says.

Initially inspired by acts like Studio 1, Basic Channel and Matthew Herbert, as well as the early trance scene in Frankfurt, SCSI-9 have become an inspiration for younger generations of Russian producers.

Now there are quite a lot of young producers and DJs doing house and electronica stuff, as well as a number of good clubs with top booking,” Anton says of the scene in his hometown.

What we miss badly are specialized club and music mass media. All the radio stations and TV channels deal with pop and mainstream music only. There isn’t even a magazine dedicated to club music besides the usual nightlife advertising magazines.

Renowned for their live shows where they often performed as a trio with singer Katya Ryba, or even as a quartet with a bass guitarist, Anton and Maxim have stripped down their live sets of late and resultantly it will only be the two of them touring Australia.

It’s more expensive for the organizers to handle four people… we used to tour that way until recently,” Anton explains.

Our bass player moved to Prague, and Katya is concentrating more on her solo career. After all, we were very slow with the songwriting; we’ve just run out of new songs now.

Aside from SCSI-9 playing live as a pair Anton will also be doing some solo DJ sets as part of their first trip to our shores.

I’ve been DJing with vinyl for 15 years now, that’s why holding a vinyl in my hands is the most natural thing for me,” Anton says when aked about his preference for the format in his DJ sets.

Vinyl is something concrete, material, and with beautiful artwork… something warm. Of course I see a place for vinyl even in today’s digital world. The CD was also said to die not so long ago, but it’s still there. And so is the vinyl. A digital file is something abstract, only numbers,” he says, demonstrating an organic philosophy that also bleeds into SCSI-9’s original production work.

In all SCSI-9 have released four full-length albums, including two on Kompakt, the most recent being last year’s Easy as Down. Their latest production, a deep and driving cut entitled ‘Another Day Acid’ – originally released on the flip side of Speicher 55 - was arguably the highlight of Kompakt’s recent sampler, Kompakt Total 9. While renowned for their deep and melodic micro house sound, they have experimented across disparate sonic territory within the electronic oeuvre, as was demonstrated when they recorded the soundtrack for a Moscow drama production earlier in their career.

We always had two directions in our music creation,” Anton affirms. “One is for home listening, the other is for the dancefloor (like our live act). Some musicians keep different artist names for those things, but we don’t. After all, it’s hard for us to stay away from melodies, although we can dive into something abstract as well.

MAETRIK (CUBA / MOTHERSHIP) + secret international

$new.foto

To cap off a summer that has included slots from some of the world’s leading producers and DJs, Deep As Fu*k have organised a very special event this Saturday at a secret location headlined by Cuban underground sensation Maetrik.

If you liked the Radioslave/Simon Baker bash then this party is a must for you. At Deep As Fu*k we make an effort to not only showcase renowned talent– check recent gigs featuring Alex Kid, Mathew Jonson and Tigerskin – but also introduce you to great new international acts, and this is what the coming weekend is about.

Maetrik has a bulletproof techno pedigree and has been producing music under a host of monikers – including Maetrik, Mariel Ito, Plaex and Estornel - since the mid-90s, releasing on labels like Morris Audio, Tic Tac Toe, and Big Chief.

Last year Maetrik remixed material for the likes of Trentemoller and Rodriguez Jr, continuing to showcase his unique blend of techno, electro, and breakbeat and combining it with a sense of fun often absent in the genre. With regular spots at clubs like Cocoon and Priviledge, Maetrik is a ‘DJ’s DJ’ universally recognized by dance aficionados for his distinct take on techno and electronic genres.

His latest cut, ‘Choose Your System’, has been reworked by Swedish techno kingpin Adam Beyer, and the recent Materik EP, "They Love Terror", out on Cologne-based imprint Treibstoff, has already been heavily supported by everyone from Gregor Tresher to Jamie Jones.

Maetrik performs live this Saturday at a secret location with support from Deep As Fu*k residents and special guests.

D-Sens Interview

D-Sens playing at the D.A.F. 2009 Official Bake-Off alongside Simon Baker (Cocoon/Get Physical, UK)
Sat 3 Jan @ Cross, Bunker, Terrace & Carpet Lounge (24 Darlinghurst Rd, Kings-X)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Viva la France!
French producer Mat Delepau, AKA D-sens/Lunaspice, is recognized as a forward-thinking force in the underground dance scene, dividing his time between different production projects, overseeing his record label and playing at some of the world’s biggest festivals alongside the likes of Josh Wink and Thomas Schumacher. Currently in the middle of an Australia tour which included the closing set at the Deep As Fu*k Pirates Of The Underground II boat party and will culminate with a slot at the notorious Rainbow Serpent festival, Mat is enjoying bringing his sound to a fresh audience.

“The boat party was amazing… it’s a great tour,”
he says.

His affinity with Australia can be linked to his strong relationship with the Sydney-based label Beef Records.

“I was honoured to be on Beef’s first Prime Cuts compilation,”
Mat affirms.

“We work together quite often for remixes or bookings, and it’s a pleasure to work together as we have many things in common in terms of our taste and life perspectives.”

While releasing as both D-sens and Lunaspice, Mat explains the distinction between the two monikers.

“As D-sens I’m geared towards a trippy techno sound, mixed with minimal and proghouse,”
he says.

“Lunaspice is a fresh progressive live act that was created in 2000 with my partner Steven. We decided to join our ideas to create progressive trance music that wasn’t simply fast, aggressive or overly melodic music. We released an album and have had many tracks featured on compilations over the past few years, but I found I needed to express myself more freely and be able to produce tracks from many different styles that did not suite Lunaspice, so I created my alter ego ‘D-sens’, which is a bit more minimal and twisted without style boundaries.”

Mat is also one of the organisers of the well-known Arcadia Festival, which is fast developing a reputation as one of France’s leading electronic music festivals. It has now run for five years, and he is clearly extremely proud of the annual event.

“We try to join nature with electronica and people and create a dance party that celebrates an alternative way of living,”
he says.

“The music is a good excuse to bring people together and give them a nice, comfortable and colorful playground.”

While formerly running Submachine records with DJ Natas, Mat has recently launched his own label, Bus Records.

“With Sub Machine we reached a point where we’d done what we wanted to do and finally got stuck in a ‘style box’ and couldn’t really go out of this box… many of us had different needs and tastes and were going in different directions. Bus records had no style limitations and no boundaries, we just want to release good music and promote fresh artists by remixing them with top-notch producers.”

Most recently the label experienced huge success on Beatport with the Cubic Loop EP, which included a remix from D-nox & Beckers, and Mat has plenty of reason to expect further success in the New Year as well.

“I have started working on a new album for Lunaspice, the last one was in 2004 so it is probably time now,”
he says.

“Progressive trance has taken a new turn and I quite like the new direction.”

Mat also emphasizes that D-sens will remain a more personal and fluid outlet.

“With D-sens I’m focusing more on remixing and preparing a few singles, I really want to keep the project free from any specific styles and don’t want to bow to requests from inside the music industry to release an album.”

Alexkid Interview

Minted Aesthetics
Alex Kid Interview By Chris Honnery

“I want groove, sex and a twist in the music... if not, I'm not interested. Anything made with the heart I'm going to be interested in.”

We’ve come in on Alex Kid, real name Alex Mauri, one of the most highly rated producers in the electronic music world, describing his musical ethos. Since being signed to Laurent Garnier’s revered F Comm label over a decade ago, Alex has been a constant presence in the club landscape while also undergoing disparate projects and collaborating with musicians as far a field as Suzanne Vega, John Cale and even George Michael.

“I love to produce different kinds of music,”

Alex affirms.

“I'm a big fan of alternative folk music, rock and dub. I love pop when it is done with the heart and not for the wallet. To me, the last Goldfrapp album is great, a perfect example of what pop should be all about.”

Despite his indifference towards commercial paradigms Alex Kid has produced three acclaimed major albums, including Mint and most recently Caracol, both of which garnered considerable commercial success, the former spawning the hit singles ‘Don’t Hide It’ and ‘Come With Me’ and attracting remix attention from Tiga, Blackstrobe, Riton and Josh Wink. Both these tracks featured the seductive vocals of Lisette Alex and transcended the club sphere, leading me to ask Alex whether he is wary of his production ever becoming too ‘tracky’.

“Wrong question!”

he responds.

“Lately I'm all about tracks! I'm a big fan of Basic Channel, Johhny D and also Radio Slave. I'm all about the groove, barely no vocals...”

However don’t let these remarks lead you to believe that Alex has a single dominant style or focus in his output. He also has band, Dubphonic, a dub influenced electronic outfit that have finally completed their second album.

“The idea behind it was to imagine the soundtrack of a Sergio Leone movie made by John Carpenter,”

Alex says of the project.

“I’m not sure we have succeeded, but I feel very comfortable with the result. Unluckily, nowadays it is hard to have a label release this kind of music. It is very cinematic, and record labels expect ‘hits’ - we just cared about beauty.”

Since his most recent tour of Australia late last year Alex has relocated to Berlin and busied himself in his studio.

“I have a nice studio on the same floor as the Weekend club on Alexander Platz,”

he reveals.

“It’s great!  I’ve also just signed two EPs, one to Cadenza [Luciano's Label] and another one to Rekids [Radio Slave's Label].”

Releasing on different labels is something we will probably see more of in terms of future Alex Kid releases, considering the recent announcement from Garnier’s PR team that F Comm will be taking a break.

“Well, honestly I'd put it in other words than ‘taking a break’,”

Alex reveals before adding,

“I felt relieved when they told me they were going to stop. I think they should have done it before my third album [Caracol].  F Comm is a legend as they have pushed some of the major French electronic artists, but lately they lacked motivation. Given the situation nowadays, you really need to be aware of what is happening and listen to a lot of music, discover what is interesting and not get stuck in a hole. It is very difficult and it takes a lot of motivation.”

Alex himself though is far from uninspired, despite the considerable time that has passed since the release of Caracol in ’06.

“I realised the other day I had enough material for 2 albums,”

he says of the follow-up release.

“Now I have to make a selection, push the production, take the time, make sure I'm happy with it... and find a label ready to release an album!”

We will have to wait and see whether Alex unveils any new material during his imminent Sydney appearance, but in either case, his set will certainly leave us satisfied.

“I'm playing a lot of ‘house influenced’ tracks,”

he says of his current DJ sets.

“I want groove and sex in the music, and I also want to trip. I actually don't know [what I will play in Sydney], it all depends on the vibe... but it'll be fun for sure - I can't wait!”

Alex Kid (France/ F Comm) plays Deep As Fu*k at The Bunker on Saturday 20 December, with support from Uone (Melbourne), Schwa, Marcotix, Rif Raf and Diatribe. Doors open 9pm.

FIORD aka ANTIX - live @ the BUNKER

$new.foto

Firstly - click here and check the pictures from the recent party with New Yorks outfit RubnTug

Somewhere back in the late 1990’s brothers Barton and Hayden Strom, fresh faced and with a love for electronic music, formed the soon to be world famous outside NewZealand – ANTIX. Iboga Records in Denmark got whiff of the Antix sound and promptly signed the two brothers who then produced their landmark debut album “Lull” in 2003. The album won over fans and critics alike, ticking all boxes with the media and generating a string of killer live performances. The brothers were building a solid reputation as one of the most indemand progressive acts on the planet. The touring trend followed as the boys started clocking in big festival dates to crowds in excess of 10,000 and performed in some of the most respected clubs worldwide. Quite possibly New Zealand’s most well traveled artists after performing live in over 25 countries over the past 7 years.

Now the boys are evolving above and beyondthe scene pumping out deep minimal and tech-house tunes, again establishing themselves on the world stage. Anyone who attended last year's performance at LadyLux will know that the new Fiord live set is not to miss and will more than satisfy any one from the ex-diehard trancer to the Versace pushing gogo dancer putting NewZealand on the map again.
